Nice Nature

Over the course of his career, Nice Nature ran in 41 races and won 7 of them—including four G2 victories.

He had undeniable talent.
He could reach for greatness, get just within reach of it… but never quite grasp a G1 win.
And yet, despite that, he captured the hearts of fans across Japan and became a living legend.

Nice Nature was born in 1988 in Hokkaido.
At first glance, he was an unremarkable colt. But there were those who saw promise in him.

When he secured his first victory in just his second race, his team began aiming for the coveted Classic Triple Crown.
But the reality was harsh—he was still developing and simply not strong enough.
Perhaps they pushed him too far; he suffered an injury and missed both the Satsuki Sho and the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby).

That year, the star of the Classics was Tokai Teio.
Nice Nature remained in the shadows—not even a supporting role.

But come summer, Nice Nature made his comeback.
He recovered from his injury and gradually began to blossom.
He won a graded race and started drawing attention as a rising summer contender.

Then fate shifted.

Tokai Teio was sidelined by injury, leaving the autumn Classics without a central star.
When Nice Nature won the G2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai, a trial for the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger), he stepped forward as the next potential hero.

But reality proved unkind.
In the G1 Kikuka Sho, he began to fall behind at the third corner and couldn’t muster a finishing kick in the final stretch.
He placed fourth—so close, yet not enough.

Still, his fire never faded.

In December, he won the G2 Naruo Kinen and earned a place in the year-end G1 Arima Kinen, where he would challenge the mighty Mejiro McQueen, the era’s greatest stayer.

Though he had yet to win a G1, his consistent strength earned him the second-favorite spot behind McQueen.

But neither Mejiro McQueen nor Nice Nature would be the star of that race.

Dai Yusaku, the 14th favorite, shocked the nation with a blistering late run, setting a new Japanese record and leaving everyone—including the race caller—speechless:
“Unbelievable! Dai Yusaku!!!”

Nice Nature ran a solid race, but once again couldn’t quite break through—finishing in third place.

And from that moment, his path as the “Bronze Collector” truly began.

The following year, he ventured into mile races: four starts, and he placed 3rd, 4th, 3rd, and 3rd.

The final third? The Arima Kinen. Again.

The year after that: 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd.
And when he finally faltered, it was spectacular—15th in the Tenno Sho (Autumn), and 7th in the Japan Cup.

As the year closed, he entered his third consecutive Arima Kinen.
This time, Tokai Teio was making his comeback from injury, and a newly awakened Biwa Hayahide was stealing the spotlight.

Nice Nature, now aging, was ranked 10th in the betting.
No one expected much.

Then came one of the most emotional races in Japanese racing history.
Tokai Teio, after overcoming three fractures, made a miraculous return and won.

But just behind him—pushing with quiet determination—was Nice Nature.
Perhaps inspired by his old rival, he held on and took 3rd place yet again.

That race is remembered as one of the greats, but it also brought an astounding and unique record into the world:
Three consecutive 3rd-place finishes in the Arima Kinen—a Grand Prix race determined by fan votes.

Just being selected for Arima Kinen three years in a row is a feat in itself.
To place 3rd each time? That takes something extraordinary.
Even Tokai Teio had finished 11th the previous year.

ナイスネイチャは生涯を通じて41レースに出場し、そのうち7レースで優勝しました。その中にはG2レースでの4勝も含まれています。

翌年、彼はマイルレースに出場し、4回出走して3位、4位、3位、3位となった。

最後の3分の1？またしても有馬記念だ。

その次の年は2位、3位、2位、3位。
そしてついに失速し、天皇賞・秋で15位、ジャパンカップで7位という見事な結果に終わった。

年が明けると、彼は3年連続で有馬記念に出走した。
今回は、トウカイテイオーが怪我から復帰し、新たに覚醒したビワハヤヒデが注目を集めました。

高齢となったナイスネイチャは、賭け金で10位にランクされました。
誰もあまり期待していませんでした。

そして、日本の競馬史上最も感動的なレースの一つが始まりました。
トウカイテイオーは３度の骨折を乗り越え、奇跡の復帰を果たして優勝した。
